We were excited to take on this wonderful new project. Our clients wanted an open plan design, which would give a real feeling of flow into the garden. It was important to them that the build was eco-friendly, with a natural feel, and the choices of materials and design reflected this. (Illustration 2)

The flooring was a beautiful solid maple, which was reclaimed from an old sports hall. We brought in specialists to clean and lay the wood, in a lovely random pattern, retaining all the original court markings as a striking design feature. (detail of illustration 1)

The cabinets are a lovely deep inky indigo. The glossy finish is complemented by a side profile on the tall cabinets (a small indent on the sides to allow them to be opened without a handle) giving a totally smooth sleek look. (illustration 5)

The clients wanted a sleek, modern look for the worktops. Although concrete gave the right ‘feel’ we agreed it was insufficiently eco-friendly, as well as needing a lot of maintenance, and coming in a limited range of thicknesses. Instead, we used a concrete-effect quartz, which has a similar appearance, but is available in a much slimmer size, and is more environmentally friendly.

The island unit features a down-draft extractor – this is hidden away allowing the family to cook sociably at the unit whilst entertaining, without the need for a large cooker hood which would block the view.

The new extension features wide bi-fold doors as well as a side non-opening window, enhancing the flow into the garden and maximising the natural light. Glass bricks and skylights bring in even more light. (illustration 6)

On the flat roof of the extension, we created a lovely grassed wildlife haven, using a specialist bio-diversity grass seed mix designed to encourage butterflies, bees and other wildlife. From the upstairs windows, the roof appears as part of the garden, again enhancing the natural flow between the inside and outside spaces.

The clients said ‘We contracted A&R for an extension build in Enfield. They project managed everything and brought in all trades and the architect, all of whom were professional and easy to work with. As we had some design features outside of the permitted development route, we were pleased that all planning issues were dealt with by A&R and the architect. Good dialogue throughout the build, and always there for a discussion to work through options. To note, what I also appreciated was their consideration of the impact of the work on our neighbours’.
